Week 01
Research
This post is all about giving context to my project, here I will reference online sources I have used to gain a clearer understanding of the key terms I am basing my project around.
Experimental animation
"Experimental animation is the art of combining two or more illogical paintings or art to create an animated scene. Different kinds of animation paintings are introduced at odd points which are totally irrelevant to each other. So the randomly introduced paintings create a different frame altogether in the animation process. Some animators have used a magnifying glass on paintings and multiple frames are captured to create an animation. " http://webneel.com/different-types-of-animation-styles
Above is a direct copy of what experimental animation is according to a website. What I gather from this is that experimental animation should be an animation that literally experiments with itself, this could be combining two different methods of animation (like what I will be doing) or even just combining two completely different subject matters into one to experiment how the two play off each other. Experimental animation as I can gather is literally all about experimenting to create something new and wonderful.
Abstract Animation
Abstract animation is considered a sub-genre of experimental animation. Abstract animations are visual/sound experiences that don't rely on a story or even sometimes characters but the relationship of sound and visuals.
Avante-Garde
Avante-Garde is more of a movement of innovative design. Avante-Garde is anything considered against normal conventions and pushing the boundaries of any given art form.
Surrealism
"sought to channel the unconscious as a means to unlock the power of the imagination." http://www.theartstory.org/movement-surrealism.htm
This quote from this website for me really sums up surrealism, I feel that my project will be going down the experimental route in hand with surrealism, I will however use all these terms as a basis for my research for influences and media studies. I have already come across the website for the National Film Board of Canada who have been a big force in experimental cinema with the help of the likes of Norman Mclaren, that I know of the top of my head.
